VICE-CHAIRPERSON (ZHI YI)

As the Vice-Chairperson of Elders, my main responsibility is to share the workload with the Chairperson, which includes overseeing weekly session and events organised by Elders. The duties are rather versatile and are often determined by the situation. Some of which may involve tons of administration work done behind the scene, but all with the aim of ensuring the smooth running of Elders and to ensure our volunteers and the elderly get to enjoy the most out of it.

For the past 2 years, I have been part of Elders' planning committee, organising celebration events for the elderly at SWAMI home. This year, as the Vice-Chairperson, I got the opportunities to co-head the planning of activities, not only for the elderly but also for our volunteers. These activities include Elders’ Bonding Days, Volunteers Orientation Day and Annual Appreciation Dinner. It was always fulfilling to have volunteers or elderly coming up to us and tell us that they have enjoyed this event.

Initially, I was hesitant to apply for this role, worrying that I do not have what it takes to fulfill its duties well. Only after some persuasion did I decide to take up this role. Almost a year has passed, and this was the best decision I have made. This year was the most fulfilling year of my university life. I had the pleasure to work alongside a group of passionate and enthusiastic members from the main committee, making many good friends along the way. Every event was a new learning experience. This role taught me to be more responsible and resilient. Most importantly, it taught me valuable time management and leadership skills. All these are lessons and experiences that academical education alone could never provide.

To those who are planning to join the main committee next year, do not be afraid or worried that you do not have what it takes. The results may not be as important as the process. So why not take it as a challenge to try something different? As long as you are passionate about serving the elderly and don’t mind sacrificing a bit more time serving them, you already have what it takes to take up this journey.
