AWWA CENTREHEAD (STANLEY)

Looking back at the 1 year of serving Elders as AWWA CH, I think perhaps the most surprising thing of all, would be how smooth it has been. But that’s not to say it was an easy journey. Startings are never easy, and all the more so, considering I had absolutely zero experience in leadership positions. In fact, I hardly even attended session at AWWA. With that in mind, perhaps the true question would be why I choose to take up the position in the first place.

I chose to take up the position, because I wanted to do more. As a volunteer, I always felt that I wasn’t doing enough. Interactions are something elderly sorely need due to the lack of interaction partners and at Elders, this is what we do, but it felt limited. Joining planning com allowed me a peek at how I could contribute to doing something bigger than regular interactions. Yet there was still so much more that I could do or give and thus stepped up to take on a bigger challenge.

Many people believe that a centrehead’s job is very tough and there is some sense to that. A centrehead’s job is challenging, with all the centres liaising & planning com leading. But it doesn’t need to be so. There were always people who were willing to help, who I could depend on. From Main Com to planning com, there was always someone as long as I asked, and for that I am very grateful. All that was needed really, was my determination to keep pressing forward and not give up.

And here I stand, after one year, looking back at all that had passed, finally satisfied. I did not accomplish all that I set out to do. Neither did I manage to connect with nearly as many elderly as I had hoped to. But I think that is part and parcel of life and I am proud of what I have done.

To whoever that may be keen in whichever role, you may not find the same meaning as me, but I hope you find meaning in why you want to serve because it will be your enduring light among the challenges. My biggest take home message is that regardless of what you apply for, it really doesn’t matter what you have or what you don’t have. Because as long as you have the drive to serve, everything can be picked up

When there’s a will, there’s a way and no mountain is too high for the determined. If I can, so can you!
